Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day - October 2012

It's time to check out what is flowering this month.

Begonia Superstars Red is in full bloom now, and still protecting my strawberries. You can see the unripened fruits in the photo. No prizes for guessing where the ripe fruit is. They were delicious.

Lily Sun Flight, purchased this spring and planted quite late. Which explains why it is flowering now.

Osteospermum, planted in the top of a wall basket. Big mistake. They point to the sky, so I can't see the full display. Memo to self, must plant them lower next year.

Geranium Blanche Roche, a trailing pelargonium, purchased this year, and still blooming despite recent frosts.

Hydrangea, one of the oldest plants in the garden. The bloom in the centre of the photo is the normal colour. The surrounding blooms are older and fading.

Lily Scheherazade, the name just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it ?  Another late planted lily.

Aster frikartii Monch, one of the few asters that doesn't succumb to mildew.

Begonia Superstars Apricot, I love these varieties of begonia. Pity the weather hasn't been so good to them this year.

Sedum, planted a few years ago, and putting on it's best display to date.

Cyclamen hederifolium, found these hiding at the bottom of the garden. Very hardy and very pretty.

Viola Penny, bought these for next year's spring display, but they are flowering now.

Thanks to Carol at May Dreams Gardens for hosting this meme. If you want to see what is in bloom around the world now, pop over to Carol's blog.

  1. Chciałabym mieć jeszcze tyle kwitnących kwiatków w ogródku. Pozdrawiam.

    1. I was very late planting my baskets and tubs this year, hence the late blooms.

  2. Such lovely colourful flowers you have! I thought my lilies were flowering late this year but looking at yours, mine were early... Maybe I should do what you did, plant some lilies every year much later than supposed to, so I can extend the lily season, what a great idea :-)

    1. It was purely by accident. I came across some lily bulbs for sale late in the season. They were in good condition, so I bought them.

  3. Beautiful selection of blooms and some nice ones for this time of year. Love your notes, it's so important to make note of changes needed.

  4. I would go as far as to say the Hydrangeas faded blooms looks equally as good as the fresh ones. I am very tempted to try these Cyclamen which you have, in a sheltered spot of our garden.

    1. I would highly recommend the hardy cyclamen. And if you let them set seed, they spread where they are happy. Apparently ants spread the seed, although I haven't actually witnessed this myself.

    1. I think it's all the rain that has kept them happy.

  6. I really like osteospermum - I found a lovely deep peachy coloured one this year but he wanted £7 for it so I decided to look elsewhere - I never found one the same! Lots of beautiful flowers in your garden. Great blog name by the way :)

    1. Hi Pat, thanks for visiting.
I buy Osteospermum as plug plants from the seed companies in spring. They grow quickly, and are a lot cheaper than buying full size plants later in the season.

  7. Lovely to see so much colour still. The Hydrangea is beautiful, I assume you have some acid in your soil. I can only get mine to bloom blue/mauve by putting something in the water but I soon got fed up with that so they are always pink now :-) The little Violas are so pretty.

    1. My soil is naturally alkaline, but I throw a lot of spent compost on it, especially around the hydrangeas. They come out a different colour every year.

  8. My favourite is the tongue-twister lily.

    1. I was very late planting out pots this year, and I mean very late. But luckily, it has resulted in a late display.
